How Bake Sales Fight Childhood Hunger
Childhood Hunger is a Reality for More Than 12.6 Million Children
Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale®, presented by Domino® Sugar and C&H® Sugar, is a national campaign that mobilizes Americans to end childhood hunger by holding bake sales in their communities. To date, more than 5.3 million meals have been served to low-income children because of the continued efforts of individuals, companies, restaurants, organizations and schools that hold bake sales.
Funds raised through Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale will be used to ensure America's most vulnerable children - those living in poverty and at risk of hunger in your state and across the country get the regular, healthy meals they need to learn, grow, and thrive. Grants from Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale campaign support and promote:
- Access to after-school and summer feeding programs, ensuring that more children receive nutritious food.
- Organizations administering Share Our Strength's Operation Frontline®, a groundbreaking nutrition education program that empowers families at risk of hunger with the knowledge and culinary skills they need to prepare healthy, low-cost meals and snacks.
- Organizations working to provide services to low-income families living in areas of high-need and extreme poverty.
Great American Bake Sale Funds At Work
Harvesters, located in Kansas City, Missouri is the city's only food bank. More than 88,000 children within Harvesters' 13-county service area are currently eligible to recieve free and reduced-price meals at schools. Afterschool and during the summer, like millions of children across America, the children in Kansas City will have no place to turn for food. To help them, Harvesters runs meal sites during the summer where children can get meals. With a grant from Share Our Strength's Great American Bake Sale, Harvesters was able to increase the number of summer meal sites, and drastically increasing the number of meals provided to children over the summer. In just one year, Harvesters had a 143% increase in the number of meals provided over the summer to children facing hunger.
